Stress introduced to patients, visitors, and employees by medical environments (any facility that administers goods to improve one's physical or mental health) can have a negative impact on healing outcomes, including poorer recovery for patients and higher risk of burnout in employees. This added stress can be reduced by the intentional use of visual art elements in the environment. These elements include architecture, interior design, art displays, and art making opportunities including art therapy. A one-time cross-sectional survey administered to 56 participants with experience in medical environments in the last decade in combination with eight semi-structured interviews with individuals currently employed in medical environments revealed current trends in the implementation and perception of visual art elements in medical environments today. The researcher hypothesized a positive correlation between participant satisfaction scores and diversity of visual art forms implemented, which was rejected. Findings showed an overwhelming presence and appreciation of nature-related art displays, a trend towards evidence-based design in new construction, and user insight into how visual art elements impact the medical experience.
