The purpose of this study involved examining how parental involvement and parent-child relationships for children with autism changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study primarily focused on the Ecological Systems Theory to provide support for how many different parts of an individual's life can change with the different impacts that one individual may receive due to the pandemic. An online survey was given to gather data that focused on parental input on how their lives in a home setting, therapeutic setting, and academic setting changed for both the parent and child from prior to the pandemic to 12 months after the onset of the pandemic. There was a total of 18 participants who either partially or fully completed the survey, and responses were ultimately analyzed through a qualitative and quantitative approach. Findings suggest that most participants resulted in overall having an impact within their home life, therapy interventions, and within the school system due to changes that occurred throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Limitations on the study pertain to the timeline of the survey distribution as it was allotted for a selected amount of time and resulted in a smaller scale of participants. Further research could reveal additional findings surrounding the impact of the pandemic on children with autism as well as their families during different timelines of the pandemic. Future research would also provide professionals in the settings discussed in this study to have the opportunity to add additional input of the challenges that occurred for that field. Within the suggested further research topics, it would allow for better understanding of communication, expression of rewards and concerns, and continuing to learn how to better advocate for children with disabilities during an unpredictable manner for all parties involved.
