Analytics are expensive and time consuming. The unaddressed problem was the extent to which type (2-year vs. 4-year) and affiliation (public vs. private) of higher education institutions moderated analytics use in mediating the relationships between knowledge assets, institutional agility, and performance. This moderated mediation study quantitatively evaluated analytics as a mediator. Institution type and affiliation was the moderator. Dynamic capabilities, the theoretical framework, describes an organization's ability and speed to build, integrate, and reassign competencies to respond to changing markets. Leaders from U.S.-based higher education institutions with at least 1,000 enrollment responded to a 24-item SurveyMonkey questionnaire. Four moderated mediation questions were analyzed using Hayes Process Models. Answers can assist higher education with increasing agility, which is a dynamic capability, to improve performance. Regardless of type and affiliation, higher education institutions show higher institutional agility when analytics are adopted and show higher analytics adoption when knowledge assets are higher. More agile institutions do not show higher levels of process-level performance, but these institutions do show higher levels of strategic and financial performance. Current study findings align with previous research, in that knowledge assets predict analytics usage and knowledge assets predict agility. Findings also align with previous research in that agility predicts strategic and financial performance outcomes. Findings of this study differ from, and do not align with, previous research with regard to process-level performance. When institutional agility was present, analytics adoption did not predict process-level performance. Future research is recommended for smaller institutions of higher education, on the breadth and definition of knowledge assets, and to explore knowledge assets as an antecedent to agility.
