Moral distress can influence counselor self-efficacy in several ways. This generic qualitative inquiry explored moral distress in professional counselors to answer the research question: "How do counselors describe their experiences with moral distress and how it relates to self-efficacy?". Ten licensed professional counselors (LPC) from a large Southern state participated in semi-structured individual interviews to share their experiences with moral distress. The participants discussed the impact of moral distress on their perceived self-efficacy during the initial phase of the distressing incident and their perceptions of how moral distress impacted their self-efficacy overall. Using ATLAS.ti software, the data was analyzed using thematic analysis with constant comparison, and the emerging themes were organized into two categories. The themes in the first category, Self-efficacy and Initial Distress, describe the participants' perceptions of self-efficacy during their initial reactions to their morally distressing experiences. Themes in this category were novice counselors, emotional distress, and self-doubt. The themes in the second category, Overall Impact of Moral Distress on Self-efficacy, emerged as the participants shared how they addressed the moral distress and how the perceived the morally distressing incident impacted their overall self-efficacy. Themes in this category were support, reflection, faith/calling, changing jobs/position, supervision and consultation, improved documentation, better therapist, and processing. The results of this study revealed that moral distress negatively impacted counselor self-efficacy during initial distress and contributed to greater counselor self-efficacy overall.
