Historically, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender and gender nonconforming individuals experience unique mental and physical health disparities. Even though the Supreme Court has legalized several LGBT rights, including nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage and protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity; there is no federal law outlawing discrimination nationwide at this time. Thus, LGBT residents of some states are left unprotected against discrimination in employment, housing, and private or public services based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. This theoretical study examined published literature between May 2015 and May 2020 to assess the impact of legal, social and individual factors on the quality of life of LGBT individuals and determine which factors positively improve the mental and physical health outcomes by examining three research questions. Findings indicate that legal factors (protective laws and access to health insurance and healthcare) protect minorities groups and prevent them from being vulnerable to sexual-orientation and gender-identity-based discrimination. Research indicates that social factors (parental relationships, school belongingness, intimate relationships, community support, and treatment interventions) reinforce the protective effect of both functional and structural social relationships on quality of life. The individual factors (age, socioeconomic status, race, self-efficacy, self-esteem, self-compassion, resilience/grit, religiosity/spirituality, and outness) have been shown to reinforce the ability to cope with stressors and reduce the negative outcomes. Finally, tailored healthcare interventions should incorporate these factors to promote wellbeing and empower LGBT individuals to become advocates for their own healthcare and reduce health risks.
