This study investigates the idea that leader authenticity can be elicited or increased through a special kind of life story called the Tamalpa Life/Art Personal Mythology. Our notions of the heroic leader have led us to focus too much on a leader's outward actions and too little on the interior stage of the self from which the drama of leadership is performed. Twentieth-century ways of being in the world are not effective in coping with the systemic organizational problems leaders face now. The expressive arts, though, have the potential to bring authenticity to leaders who wish to be more vulnerable, more authentic in their ways of being. This phenomenological study suggests that Personal Mythology can help leaders become more vulnerable and relationally-oriented as they seek authenticity. This study also brings the Tamalpa Life/Art Personal Mythology to the attention of the academic leadership community as a viable arts-based, theory-driven model for developing authenticity in leaders.
