The idea of immersive experiences germinated nearly 200 years ago! In 1838, the first stereoscope was invented, using twin mirrors to project a single image. The stereoscope, and numerous innovations that followed, sought to give the viewer a greater sense of presence in the environment they saw. Simplistic methods have given way to more and more complex and effective technologies, but the ultimate objective has remained the same-namely, to create a projection of personal immersion into another environment. Creating narrative VR has a number of inherent technical and logistical challenges that have hindered the adoption of the medium into mainstream feature filmmaking. The goal of this research is to assess the various key challenges and to discover the ways in which VR innovators and content producers are addressing those challenges. The data set selected for analysis was culled from the more than seven hundred interviews with virtual reality enthusiasts, content producers, academics, and hardware innovators in the Voices of VR podcast archives. Thematic analysis of the interview content resulted in revealing the importance of the immersive state in VR and some of the key technical and logistical components to achieving and maintaining that state. Mel Slater's presence theory is supported, as are the concepts of media enjoyment, transportation, flow theory, embodiment, and empathy as they relate to immersive experiences.
