Police officers' interactions with citizens sometimes result in using force against offenders to protect officers and citizens. When police officers use excessive force, it can lead to civil liabilities against the officer and the police department, especially when police leaders fail to train officers properly. Police officers must receive continuous training to handle the use of force situations properly. Also, additional training is necessary to investigate complex crimes. Naturally, the community desires professional protection from police organizations, and elected officials need funding to support the police department. External factors affecting police organizations include the ability and desire of taxpayers to support the organization financially. The problem was to explore standardized professional development training for police officers. The purpose of the qualitative case study was to explore what effect the lack of standardized professional development training for police officers has on excessive force confrontations, and the ability to investigate complex crimes. Dworkin's 1977 theory of law and integrity was the guiding theoretical framework for the study. This framework relates to the vital concept of professionalism in police work and the wiliness of the citizens to obey laws. The researcher used a qualitative methodology to provide a holistic approach to the problem of inadequate training and the effects on the agency and community. The study was essential to determine if police officers receive the training needed to handle violent confrontations and solve complex crimes. The researcher steered this case study using face-to-face confidential interviews, including interview questions aligned with research questions for the study. The sampling strategy encompassed police organizations from southeast Michigan. Emerging themes from the discussions included: (1) additional in-service training is needed. (2) Police officers need training in computer and cell phone forensics. (3) police officers need more training writing reports. (4) Police officers need more training in interpersonal communications. (5) Police officers need more training in de-escalating confrontational situations. (6) More training is necessary to solve complex crimes. Future researchers should explore funding sources to provide standardized professional development training.
