Thesis (M.F.A.)--Pratt Institute, 2021.

This thesis proposal explores a mutually shared harmonic environment for residents and tourists. Performance rituals are used to create a prototypical system for cultural interaction and social harmony. In recent years, music and entertainment have become increasingly interlinked with travel. UNESCO has listed over 49 cities all over the world, with long standing musical cultures, and well developed musical tourism, as Cities of Music. As tourists frequent sites of musical heritage, the living space and environment of residents are seriously affected by the flood of people. In these cities, there is also a huge demand for music related educational spaces and private rehearsal areas. Because of the noise, culture conflicts and different living habits, residents and tourists dwell in a non-harmonious atmosphere. The thesis investigates 'harmony' through three aspects:, acoustics, communication and integration with the historic fabric of the site. By the insertion of ritual spaces into a residential shared environment, the prototypical system enhances performance rituals to fit into various musical cultures and act as spatial devices, which create new relationships between tourists and residents. It combines daily events like dining, lounging or sleeping with musical activities, and explores harmonies on the interior integrated with the exterior environment. This integration cultivates cross cultural understanding through the universal language of music, and integrates music with the celebration of local rituals, explored in confined domestic spaces. The simultaneity of rituals will create a specific spatial quality, by increasing cultural experiences through visualization of sound vibration, integrated with a rhythm of prototypical insertions. To achieve spatial harmony, two systems are combined. A water vibration system is developed to visualize the vibration of sound. The vibrating water acts as a transformable material that works both vertically and horizontally. It will be triggered by music and human voices. The prototypical acoustic partitions can be joined together, and act as the tourists' bedrooms. They can also be transformed into music educational spaces. The partitions create visual privacy to enhance the visualization of sound and rhythm of spaces. For material strategies, the weaving of historical patterns is developed. By combining the technology of programmed weaving, the original historical patterns are transferred to acoustical panels, on the surface of the partition system. The site of Gulangyu Island, in China, is the prototypical location for the thesis. It's located in a historical building block that is owned by two famous conductors. Other chosen sites, in Cities of Music, in which the prototypical system is explored, are Chennai, India and Seville, Spain.
