Cabaret is a musical, set in the year 1931 in Berlin, Germany, that revolves around a young American writer and an English cabaret performer. It focuses on the nightlife of the Kit Kat Klub- a metaphor for the ominous political developments in the Weimar Republic and the society of the club. Attending this night club was a major form of escapism of reality; a diversion from the broader issues presented by society, its political environment, and economic harshness. The inspiration for the scenic design of this production came from various forms of research, such as real historical images of the time period, and artwork from the movement of German Expressionism. From this came an expressionist-realistic set that hid harsh violence behind closed doors, and masked industrial truth with beautiful diversion.
