Empathy is a word and concept that has been discussed and studied for decades, documented primarily by psychologists, sociologists, educators, and social workers. Since the 1970s, social-emotional intelligence has been the topic of research with infants, children, teens, and adults. Empathy, described as the ability of a person to respond to the emotional state of another, is regarded as an essential social-emotional skill (SES). The literature review cites empathy as a key SES for success in relationships at all ages, academic achievement, and successful employment. Research studies involving the social-emotional response capability in infants and young children have typically involved a method that caused distress, anxiety, or fear during the test. This research study was designed to document empathic responses in preschool-age children 4-5years old using a kind test method called "The Pink Pencil Test." The test consisted of a structured activity in small group settings that required recognizing, empathizing, and sharing with a child in need. The subjects included 129 boys and girls at seven preschools throughout the state of Michigan and one preschool in California. The children were randomly divided in to groups primarily composed of six children. A drawing activity was conducted by the researcher, designed to include a step in which one child would lack the necessary "pink pencil" in order to complete that part of the activity. The researcher did not comment, speak, or in any way intervene at this point. In contrast to the child without the pink pencil, one child in the group had two pink pencils. The responses of the children at this point of the activity were documented asempathic or nonempathic, verbal or with action. Empathy EmQue Test scores were completed by the lead preschool teacher for each child, and the score on each question for each child was compared to their response using a chi-square method of analysis. This research supports the idea of incorporating kindness and the opportunity to express empathy with peers at the preschool level as an important component of the curricula. According to the literature review, developing empathic and other social-emotional skills at a young age has the potential impact of decreasing bullying and violence, increasing the potential for strong interpersonal relationships, higher academic achievement, and vocational success throughout the spectrum into adulthood.
