Employees who work in mental and behavior health residential facilities are met with challenging behaviors. Frontline employees commonly known as direct support professionals (DSPs), who based on training are sometimes ready to implement interventions and sometimes are not ready. The aim of this qualitative exploratory case study was to get an in-depth understanding of the employees' perceptions of new hire training and how well prepared they are to address the mental and behavioral challenges in a residential facility. The participants of the study consisted of seven current and former staff of one mental and behavior health residential facility. Data collection consisted of semi-structured interviews guided by two research questions, observations of video, documents, audio, and visual materials. Direct support professionals are the first people residents encounter after the initial admission process making it important to be able to begin developing an understanding of what the program expectations are a positive relationship. This encounter sets the boundaries and guidelines in which the residents should adhered to while enrolled in the program. Staff training and development is crucial and should be relevant to the needs of the resident. Staff with little to no training are at disadvantage and the residents do not receive the best quality of care in that situation. The findings of the study revealed the participants perceive training as very relevant in the decision-making process, safety of the residents and staff, and is crucial in ensuring everyone understands policies, procedures, and the expectations of the work environment.
