The invasion of Mesoamerica by the Spanish in the 16th century generated a shift from a religion that worshipped many gods, each of which represented the gifts of the land, into one that centered in the belief of a single god. Though the attempted eradication of the ancient religion was successful in terms of destroying physical sites and indigenous political institutions, it failed in completely targeting and removing the remnants of a culture that once was and continued to be present through traditions, customs, and ideas embedded in architectural designs and iconography. This thesis will focus on examining the Convent of San Juan Evangelista in the ward of Culhuacan in Mexico City with its murals and architectural style to explain the process of transculturation that occurred as a consequence of the interaction of the indigenous and Spanish cultures. Through the analysis of native icons in European contexts, I will highlight the complexity of the Encounter and the resistance of indigenous peoples and determine whether evangelization tactics were successful in terms of converting the people of the Valley of Mexico and integrating them into a New Order.
