A high level of protection is required for soldiers, firefighters, industrial workers, and medical personnel when they are facing threats from chemical and biological hazards. Current commercial chemical protective clothing (CPC) is made from single-layer or multilayer elastomers, thermoplastics, and fabrics, as well as the hybrids of these materials. The main drawback of single layer CPC is that the resistance is against only a limited number of chemicals, which restricts its applications. Although multilayer CPC is able to protect a wider variety of chemicals, it lacks flexibility due to the presence of a thermoplastic layer. This work investigated the fabrication of a multilayer laminate composed of isobutylene-isoprene based rubber (IIR, or brominated IIR, BIIR), acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), and fluoroelastomer (FKM/Viton) to achieve an improved barrier property, coupled with good flexibility and elasticity, which can overcome the drawbacks of the barrier materials of the current CPC. Since the adhesion between these three rubber layers is naturally poor, two approaches were proposed to promote the adhesion: rubber blends as a tie layer and compounding with adhesion promoter (phosphonium salt). The materials were then processed in kilogram batches via Banbury internal mixer and rubber extrusion. The adhesion level of the layers was evaluated by T-peel test and the results showed that improved adhesion in the multilayer was obtained. The chemical barrier property of the laminates was also analyzed via the flame ionization detector (FID) based permeation test setup.
