In this thesis, I explore and analyze black cardamom (Amomum tsao-ko) commodity chains from cultivation to consumption, as well as the rural livelihoods that are connected to these chains in southeastern Yunnan province, China. Black cardamom is a perennial non-timber forest product (NTFP) that grows at high elevations in East and Southeast Asian sub-tropical ecosystems. Black cardamom seedpods are a common spice used in both traditional Yunnan cuisine and in traditional Chinese medicine. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork, completed during the summer of 2015, I investigate the cultivation practices of ethnic minority and Han Chinese cultivators living in Yunnan's Maguan county, investigating how these rural farmers grow and sell their cardamom to vendors and wholesalers in the province. Moreover, I analyze how cultivators at different scales work to maintain sustainable livelihoods, and how farmers interact with local government agricultural bureaus with regards to extension services. I then follow the black cardamom as it leaves the mountainsides, transported by wholesalers from Yunnan and from other provinces in China. I trace these commodity chains through the provincial capital Kunming until they eventually reach larger domestic and international markets. During each stage of analysis, I assess the roles of ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic background in market access and transactions, as well as government attitudes towards cultivators and the black cardamom trade. I find that while the cardamom trade is a core component of many rural livelihoods in the area, market profits, access to resources, and government aid is not equal across the industry. Furthermore, I unearth cultural and social tensions that maintain a static social hierarchy within the industry, which eventually pushes poorer stakeholders out of the industry and lets wealthier stakeholders dictate prices along the commodity chains.
