Differences in scores between Caucasians and ethnic minorities have raised concerns about the validity of neuropsychological tests with ethnic minorities. Studies have demonstrated that acculturation and enculturation can affect test scores among ethnic minorities, including Filipino Americans, an understudied group. Limited research has investigated the measurement of subjective memory among ethnic minorities. This study seeks to explore both objective and subjective memory among Filipino Americans in relation to acculturation and enculturation.Forty-two healthy, community-dwelling individuals identifying as Filipino or Filipino American between the ages of 18 and 70 years old (mean age = 34.95) were administered the following measures: California Verbal Learning Test-II (CVLT-II; Delis, Kramer, Kaplan, & Ober, 2000), Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R; Benedict,1997), Memory Functioning Questionnaire (MFQ; Gilewski, Zelinski, & Schaie, 1990), Enculturation Scale for Filipino Americans (ESFA; del Prado & Church, 2010), Suinn-Lew Asian Self-Identity Scale (SL-ASIA; Suinn, Rickard-Figueroa, Lew, & Vigil, 1987), and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale-Revised (CESD-R; Eaton, Muntaner, Smith, Tien, & Ybarra, 2004).Preliminary analyses revealed no significant relationships between acculturation and subjective memory (r = .01; p = .964) nor between acculturation and objective memory measures (BVMT-R Total Recall r = -.12, p = .446; BVMT-R Delayed Recall r = .02, p = .912; CVLT-II Total r = .03, p = .831; CVLT-II Long Delay Free Recall r = .04, p = .781). A trend toward significance was found between enculturation and subjective memory (r = .271, p = .082). Enculturation was not significantly correlated with objective memory tasks (BVMT-R Total Recall r = .03, p = .853; BVMT-R Delayed Recall r = -.01, p = .936; CVLT-II Total 1-5 r = .12, p = .470; CVLT-II Long Delay Free Recall r = .12, p = .453).The small sample size and characteristics of the study sample limit the generalizability of findings. Although nonsignificant, the correlation between enculturation and subjective memory suggests a medium effect size. Study findings are limited and make it difficult to discuss clinical implications. Additional research with larger samples is warranted to help further clarify the relationship between acculturation and enculturation with objective and subjective memory.
