Bimanual coordination is involved but often unattended in performing many functional living skills (e.g. buttering bread, buttoning shirt, and tying shoelaces). It becomes essential when people are trying to learn new motor skills (e.g. juggling, playing music instruments) or rehabilitating from neurological diseases (e.g. Stroke, Brain Injury). Perceptual information plays a cardinal role in learning and control of bimanual coordination. It defines what a coordination pattern "looks", "sounds", or "feels" like. In this dissertation, the special interest was paid to understand the roles of visual and kinesthetic information in learning and control of bimanual coordination. Based on the perceptually driven dynamical model of bimanual coordination, a series of experiments have been conducted to show that: 1) bimanual coordination is modality specific and an early focus on visual information is advantageous; 2) bimanual coordination learning is frequency specific and training at a high frequency promotes transfer of coordination; 3) the use of visual and/or kinesthetic information to stabilize intrinsic bimanual coordination pattern is a function of movement frequency, and 4) the visuomotor coordination tasks can potentially capture the chronic cognitive-motor deficits associated with concussion The findings from the current dissertation were summarized with limitations and practical implications discussed in the end.
