Collaborative options, in the realm of technical collaboration, have grown rapidly over the past decade. Google Apps Education Edition is a suite of collaboration and communication tools that are free for schools to utilize. Research demonstrates that Web 2.0 is blossoming, schools have technology standards to meet without additional time for instruction and little extra funding, and businesses are vocalizing concerns that graduates are not prepared for the workplace with communication and collaboration skills. A qualitative research study was conducted utilizing interviews and focus groups with university professors and students to determine if it is advantageous to teach collaboration with Google Apps in higher education. Eight instructors who utilize or have used at least two Google Apps Education Edition collaborative tools in their classes participated in individual interviews and four focus groups of students who have used these tools were conducted. The study revealed the professors' perceptions of the benefits of teaching with Google Apps Education Edition and the students' views of learning collaboration skills and collaborative technology with this suite of tools. Both groups felt teaching with collaborative technology tools was beneficial when utilized effectively and instruction of the tools was included. It was also reported that teaching students collaboration and communication skills via Google Apps assisted students in preparing for their future careers, allowed students to meet asynchronously for school group work, and professors' had access to all of the collaborative work as it was in-progress. Recommendations for future studies are to survey graduates regarding their collaboration preparedness and to conduct a comparative study of the advantages and disadvantages of collaborative technology tools in higher education. Google Apps Education Edition is an effective suite of tools to teach necessary collaboration and communication skills.
