The United States Army is going through a transition and civilian workers are an essential aspect of the national defense in the United States. As this transition continues, the need for strong civilian leaders increases. Although the federal government provides training for civilians, this training lacks guidance on developing leadership skills. This study aims to determine if and how the use of emotional intelligence can be used to enhance Army Civilian training programs. Additionally, the researcher explored how training in emotional intelligence may minimize burnout, lower high turnover rates and improve job satisfaction within Army Contracting Departments. The researcher interviewed nine training facilitators of the Army Civilian Leadership Development Program (ACLDP) at Redstone Arsenal. Through semi-structured interviews, the researcher explored participants views on the impact of the lack of training in emotional intelligence might be on Army civilian leaders. Findings showed that the introduction of emotional intelligence empowers leaders in the workplace and helps transition government personnel from work positions to leadership positions. Findings also showed specifically how training in the use of emotional intelligence minimized burnout, lowered high turnover rates, and improved job satisfaction. The overall findings revealed that training in emotional intelligence enhance leadership training for civilian leaders through strengthening leadership training and reducing adverse results due to lack of emotional training. The researcher recommends that the federal government, as well as other organizations, embrace the importance of emotional intelligence as it relates to leadership training programs. Lastly, the researcher encourages future research regarding Emotional Intelligence leadership and the impact at the federal government level.
