This research paper seeks to determine whether the use of a poetry writing technique involving the poetic device of parallelism helps students acquire grammatical forms in English as a second or foreign language. It is founded on theory and empirical research which argues for the efficacy of poetry reading for heightening learner attention to linguistic form, as well as reports of classroom practice which have found poetry reading and writing to be useful and enjoyable for second language learners. Poetry as a genre is hypothesized to be effective for language learning as it calls attention to linguistic form, and not just content. Participants included 20 learners of English as a Foreign Language from Egypt, Germany, Tanzania, and China. After taking a pre-test of five multiple choice questions which determined their lack of familiarity with a grammar form, the participants used that grammar form to write a short poem of five lines, in which they repeated the form in a parallel structure. This was in response to a specific writing prompt. Then participants took a post-test to determine how well they learned the structures. Results of a paired t-test showed a significant improvement between the pre and post test scores, indicating that the poetic writing intervention was successful. Moreover, participants gave open-ended testimony of their opinions of the activity, and had overwhelmingly positive reactions, considering it both efficacious and enjoyable.
