This qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study was designed to investigate the challenges of blind and visually impaired postsecondary students, matriculating a college degree. The guiding research question was "What are the lived experiences of blind and visually impaired students enrolled in or graduated from postsecondary institutions in the United States?" Data was collected by conducting audio-recorded, individual interviews using 17 semi-structured questions. The sample size in this study was 11 blind and visually impaired students. Results from the study indicate this cohort continues to encounter numerous obstacles in the higher education environment. The data suggests that lack of access to reasonable accommodations was at the forefront of the many challenges confronting students on a daily basis. Other areas of concern included the timeliness of receipt of requested accommodations; learning to navigate the campus and locate classrooms; disability and library support services; faculty attitudes; socialization; and the incompatibility of institutional software systems with screen readers for the blind and visually impaired. Participants voiced moderate to high levels of frustration surrounding these obstacles which often led to anxiety and avoidance behaviors. The most surprising result is the strong determination and self-advocacy demonstrated by the participants to earn their bachelor's degree despite both seen and unseen barriers.
