The aim of this secondary qualitative multimethod study was to: (1) understand the unique factors that contribute to deaf and hard-of-hearing communities' social determinants of health, (2) understand the attitudes, experiences, and perceptions of hearing American Sign Language/English interpreters around social justice issues education, and (3) conceptualize how ASL/English interpreters can culturally, linguistically, and socially tailor sign language to the needs of deaf communities via a social justice lens. Phase one of this study explored unique factors that influence the social determinants of health among deaf and hard-of-hearing communities in education, health and health care, and in the social and community context by employing a meta-synthesis of qualitative research studies published between 1990 and 2019. Phase two explored hearing ASL/English interpreter's attitudes, experiences, and perceptions of social justice education by employing an interpretive content analysis from open-ended response data using Mayhew's Social (Justice) Issues Education Among ASL/English Interpreters (Ann Arbor, MI: Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research [2015]) survey. Finally, this research brought the two phases together to be viewed as a set, to construct a culturally responsive framework using a social justice lens; interpreters could employ this lens as a foundation to use sign language that meets the needs of deaf communities considering the social determinants of health. Findings from the meta-synthesis showed: (1) how hearing society views deafness, (2) interpreters' competencies, command, and skills in sign language, (3) paternalistic exertion over deaf people, and (4) deaf people missing out on important information are unique influences found to affect deaf communities' social determinants of health. Findings from the interpretive content analysis showed hearing interpreters had positive attitudes, experiences, and perceptions toward social justice issues education. Finally, the conceptual framework serves as a foundation for interpreters to follow and produce interpretations that are linguistically descriptive, culturally competent, and socially equivalent for deaf consumers in order to optimize their access to education, health and health care, and in social and community contexts so they can make more informed decisions which may improve their quality of life and health outcomes.
