This study examined the way Black student leaders perceived, experienced and navigated the campus racial climate at a Catholic predominantly White institution (PWI). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight self-identified Black student leaders enrolled at a Catholic PWI. Data collected in this study was analyzed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Five major themes emerged in this research investigation: representation matters, stereotypes and racial microaggressions, establishing community, expectations of disappointment and mission failed. These findings were considered in light of existing literature and the theoretical framework, Critical Race Theory (CRT). The findings suggest that Black student leaders perceive and experience the campus racial climate to be unwelcoming at Catholic PWIs. Black student leaders employ a variety of coping strategies, including code switching and developing peer relationships, to deal with their racialized experiences in the campus setting and persist towards their academic goals.
