There is a widespread, but often muddled, charge that contemporary responses to skepticism are unsatisfying. I show this charge to manifest a long-valued ability in in the skeptical tradition: the ability to distinguish one's own genuine knowledge states from mere semblances of knowledge. I evaluate the resources contemporary epistemology has for achieving such reflexive assessments. In the end, only partial success is possible. The insoluble remainder constitutes something of the philosophical significance of skepticism.
