This thesis characterizes the first benthic foraminiferal assemblages, excellent bioindicators, of Ha Long Bay, northern Vietnam and explores how they respond to changes in climate during the past 3200 years (Late Holocene Period). Changes in several key foraminifera taxa in are tracked through regionally documented climate events including the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA), to study how they respond to variation in precipitation and sea surface temperature (SST). Miliolid foraminifera, which are exceptionally tolerant of hypersaline conditions, displayed an overall inverse relationship with precipitation through the records, especially in the VTG core. Relative foraminiferal density was compared with sediment carbonate concentrations from loss-on-ignition data from McKay et al. (2020) and there was a strong correlation between the two. This indicates that the sediment carbonates are mostly composed of foraminifera. The density of the foraminifera was also compared to SST estimations from the region. The HT core is more connected to the open ocean and as a result, the foraminifera at HT showed a stronger relationship to regional SST fluctuations. Constrained cluster analysis identified major shifts in the foraminiferal populations near the beginning of the MCA and during the transition to the LIA, which indicates that the assemblages were sensitive to the climate changes. However, local site conditions influenced the benthic foraminiferal assemblages and their particular response to these regional climate shifts.
