Over the last two decades, Brazil has witnessed the growing scene of indigenous media. Members of several different indigenous communities have become engaged in self-representation through video, associated to the Video nas Aldeias ("Video in the villages") project. This dissertation looks closely at the history of engagement of Mbya-Guarani communities with video making, in wider context of the project and the other groups involved. Adopting an ethnographic perspective on the video workshops in Mbya communities in the south of Brazil, and then looking closely at the rise of Guarani indigenous filmmakers, the dissertation analyzes the effects, local political, and the cultural implications of Guarani filmmaking, specially with regards to imaginations about History and the community's past. It also explores more closely recent developments in Mbya-Guarani productions, specifically discussing the role of collaboration, transformation and autonomy in indigenous media.
