The purpose of this study was to determine parent perspectives of social skills instruction (SSI) for their transitioning or adult child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, age 18-28 years. The leading research question asked, "What is the perception of classroom engagement for students with ASD who participate in SSI?" One hundred and thirty-one parents volunteered to participate in the first part of this mixed-methods explanatory design study. The Do2Learn JobTIPS Part II Social Skills Assessment was used to gather data to assess the 131 parent participants' perspectives on social skills objectives necessary for employment post-secondary school and lifelong quality of life. Twenty-seven participants from the first study participated in a second qualitative survey using Hawthorne Adaptive Behavior Evaluation Scale-Revised Edition: 13-18 Years Assessment and an interview session consisting of six open-ended questions to assess if their transitioning or adult child, 18-28 years was able to master the social skills required for employment, trade school or higher education. The findings in this study require further research to assist in understanding how the lack of SSI during school hours from early intervention through high school graduation, and the lack of parent training by stakeholders can become a barrier to employment, community participation, and quality of life for individuals with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder over their lifespan.
