Stream bank erosion is a common process and one that people often strive to control. One method to control bank erosion is through selectively planting vegetation, as is commonly done and commonly studied. The plants that are typically used in such studies are typically vascular plants such as grasses and trees. In contrast, non-vascular vegetation (such as moss), is not commonly studied in this context. The objective of this study was to investigate how moss may impact stream bank erosion. The specific aims are to: determine the potential relationship between moss coverage on stream banks and bank erosion; determine if moss on stream banks persists over time; and determine if there is any difference in moss coverage over time based on differential bank treatment conditions. Four treatment types were used: Control Moss, Control Bare, Treatment Moss, and Treatment Bare. The data was collected using Terrestrial LiDAR Scanning (TLS) and analyzed using Leica's Cyclone Suite software package. This study is the first to use TLS technology in this manner. Results indicated that moss coverage on stream banks does change over time and there was also a significant difference in the volume of erosion sustained by the various plot treatments over time. Therefore, under the specific conditions of this study, moss does seem to have an impact on stream bank erosion. It is expected that this study will spark multiple follow-up studies which will delve into more variables that could be influencing stream bank erosion and the relationship with moss. It is also expected that the methods presented here will be able to be utilized for other purposes and expanded further the future.
