This paper presents a discussion of emotional intelligence (EI) and recommendations as a potential tool for leadership selection and development of current and future leaders. The discussion is based on the literature review that defines the concept of emotional intelligence and evaluates three common models of EI: the ability model, the trait model, and the mixed model. Along with the discussion of common models, some instruments that are used in the field to assess EI models are also covered. These instruments are the MSCEIT, ECI, and the EQ-I. The literature review presents EI as it relates to recruitment, leadership, and development in the workplace. Lastly, recommendations for future research and conclusions for application to practice are presented.
