Number of Words: 237This study examined teacher efficacy based on the impact of teacher participation in disability simulations on educating students with cognitive disabilities. The importance of this study stems from over fifty years of research and the professional experience of the researcher. Earlier studies recognized two facts; the mandates of IDEA, for students with disabilities to receive a free and appropriate public education in their least restrictive environment with appropriate accommodations, and the lack of professional development provided for general and special education teachers to gain the expertise needed to effectively teach and provide appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities in the general education classroom. The population of this study consisted of general and special education teachers in a mid-sized school district in Tennessee. Utilizing a treatment control pre-and posttest design, data collected from surveys and a post focus group were used to examine teacher efficacy, focusing on the following subscales: Instruction, Professionalism, Teacher Support, and Classroom Management. A mixed-methods data collection approach was used to analyze the quantitative and qualitative data from the treatment and control groups. Although significance was not found within the quantitative data, significance was found within the qualitative data which indicated that teacher participation in disability simulations is an efficient way to increase the awareness of the abilities and challenges of students with disabilities, as well as the ability to strengthen teacher efficacy in the areas of awareness, instruction, motivation, collaboration, and student advocacy.
