The study aimed to assess whether the use of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and a mobile application that targets ACT processes (i.e., values clarification related to self-care and mindful walking exercises), combined with standard behavioral treatments (SBT) including feedback, goal setting and stimulus control, affect levels of physical activity and psychological flexibility. In addition, consistency and level of importance related to self-care values were measured. Five women with BMI's falling in the overweight or obese range participated in this study. Participants recorded steps taken before and after being presented with the SBT+ACT intervention. Results indicated that step count improved with the implementation of the SBT+ACT training across all participants. Additionally, results suggest that experiential avoidance related to physical or psychological discomfort during movement decreased. Consistency of value driven behavior related to self-care increased and importance of the value stayed consistent across phases.
