Interpersonal loss is often a precursor to the development of depression, and a substantial body of literature has investigated factors that contribute to resilience and growth after a loss. This study assesses whether certain character strengths may function to promote resilience, or even growth, after a loss. A sample of 1,796 people, including 223 who experienced an interpersonal loss (defined as death of a first degree relative or divorce) in the previous six months, completed questionnaires at three time points to evaluate the extent to which the character strengths hope, zest, curiosity, gratitude, and love predicted changes in depression and functional impairment over a six-month period. Exploratory analyses also assessed changes in character strengths over time after the loss to examine the concept of posttraumatic growth. Using multilevel regressions, results indicated that depression generally decreased over time. Those who experienced loss demonstrated higher levels of depression and functional impairment, but the differences from those without a loss decreased over time. Higher levels of the character strengths predicted lower depression over time, and generally lower functional impairment, but improvement did not vary across those with and without loss. Finally, twenty-three character strengths decreased over time, but this also did not vary by loss group. Findings suggest that certain character strengths predicted better functioning and mood, regardless of loss experience. Character strengths generally decreased over time, whether or not one had experienced a loss, thus raising questions about posttraumatic growth as a characteristic of personal strengths.
