Obtaining a clinical diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and subsequent evidence-based treatment is a complex and lengthy process. Previous research has demonstrated the effects of individual-, family-, and community-level variables on a child's ability to access diagnosis and treatment, although the direction of these relationships varies across studies. In addition, most studies examine the diagnostic and treatment processes in isolation despite the assumption that early screening and diagnosis enables families to access needed services more rapidly. The present study utilized a person-centered approach to understanding the full care experience (i.e., diagnosis and treatment) of children with ASD. Latent class analysis was used to identify and describe homogenous diagnostic and treatment experiences of children with ASD in a nationally-representative sample. Children's race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, ASD symptom severity, and comorbid psychological concerns were explored as predictors of class membership. Results supported the existence of a four-class model of care experiences. ASD symptom severity and comorbid conditions were found to be significant predictors of class membership. Implications for clinical care and future research were discussed.
