This between-subjects quantitative design explored mainstream stereotypes and perceptions of intimate partner violence (IPV), also referred to as domestic violence, on the basis of sexual orientation and gender. Participants (N = 180) were recruited via a web-based data collection source and randomly assigned to read one of twelve different IPV scenarios differing by type of abuse and sexual orientation/gender of the couple portrayed. All participants were then asked to rate four follow-up questions assessing perceptions of the severity of the abuse, need for law enforcement involvement, mental health treatment necessity for the victim, and frequency of the abuse. Participants rated lesbian IPV as the least severe, frequent, and deserving of law enforcement intervention and mental health services in comparison to heterosexual and bisexual couples. Overall, findings indicate that the gender of the abuser is a more salient contributor than sexual orientation when it comes to individuals' perceptions of IPV.
