Paradoxical vocal fold motion disorder (PVFMD) is a complex voice disorder that has gained interest and attention in the field of speech-language pathology, laryngology, and other fields over the past 10 years. However, a discrepancy in the literature continues to exist regarding labeling and etiology of PVFMD, as well as the assessment and treatment methods available to clinicians. The purpose of this study was to determine understanding of PVFMD among healthcare professionals, and to determine the assessment and treatment protocols currently utilized for this disorder. The secondary goal of this research is to provide awareness for the minimal research available for this airway disorder and need for future research on assessment and treatment protocols for this disorder. Participants included 75 individuals - 60 speech-language pathologists, 5 laryngologists, 2 otolaryngologists, 6 pulmonologists, 1 psychologist, and 1 pediatrician. Participants answered 30 questions related to demographic information and the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of PVFMD. Results indicated that although there is some consensus between healthcare professionals who assess and treat this disorder, there is a broad range of understanding of this disorder and its' assessment methods and treatment protocols. Results of this study also suggest the need for further research of PVFMD and this disorders' assessment and treatment protocols.
