According to statisticians, women only make up 4.4% of executive positions in Fortune 500 companies. The Senior Executive Service employs a larger percentage of women in the federal workforce at 34% and 14.6% in the private sector. The shortage of women executives is a problem that must be corrected in order to dispel biases that could negatively impact hiring, promoting, and decision-making in private sector companies and government. The purpose of this study was to find out why the Air Force Civilian Service has a shortage of women in their executive level positions and what strategies have been used to stimulate women to lead in this organization. Study results can be used as a starting point for identifying strengths and weaknesses in leadership strategies as it relates to mentoring and encouraging leadership among Air Force civilian women. A qualitative study approach was taken by interviewing three retired female Air Force civilian leaders who retired less than a year before the study was conducted. Results revealed the strategies commonly used which include setting direction and expectations, mentoring, promoting, and encouraging women to lead. In addition, leaders shared strategies such as recognizing employees, providing feedback, and putting employees in touch with other leaders. Researchers suggest mentoring and promoting women into leadership positions traditionally held by men.
