Victims who report sexual assault often experience negative (i.e., victim-blaming, suspicious) responses from police officers and/or lack of case progression through the criminal justice system, as evidenced by the nationwide backlog of unsubmitted sexual assault kits (SAKs). With the support of multiple Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) grants, the City of Mobile Police Department's (MPD) multidisciplinary team also sought to identify and amend department- and/or individual-level factors that may have contributed to negative responses to sexual assault and SAK backlogs, such as burnout culture and officers' endorsement of rape myth beliefs. Previous literature suggests that officer engagement in self-care practices, namely attending professional development programs, may reduce the likelihood of burning out and accepting rape myth beliefs. As such, using a pre-post cohort-based design, this dissertation assessed MPD's adoption of department-wide implementation of a professional development experience designed to promote an evidence-based, victim-centered response to sexual assault across the organization. Data were collected at two distinct time points, one year apart, to determine the pre-existing level of endorsement of burnout and rape myths among officers. At Time One, overall professional self-care engagement was correlated with reduced officer burnout, rape myth acceptance, and estimates of falsely reported rapes. However, significant reductions in MPD officers' burnout levels and endorsement of rape myth beliefs were not detected roughly 12-months post-training. Noted discrepancies in cross-sectional and longitudinal findings are not uncommon and were likely by weaknesses in the study's design. Conclusions, lessons learned, and implications are discussed.
