Men's reluctance in engaging in therapy has long been researched and theorized. The major focus of these studies have focused on the factors that inhibit a male. Yet, research has minimally explored the relationship of a man's masculinity and its effect on psychotherapy. Furthermore, the relationship between a man's self-compassion and his masculinity has limited amounts of research. This study proposes to investigate the level of masculinity and its relationship with a therapist's theoretical orientation and how this relationship may be mediated or moderated by level of self-compassion. Participants included adult males over the age of 18. The participants were provided with informed consent prior to data collection. Participants completed a Demographic Form, Self-Compassion Scale, Gender Role Conflict Scale, Conformity to Masculinity Norms Inventory, Preferences of Psychotherapy Approaches Scale-Revised, and the Self-Stigma of Seeking Help Measure. The results demonstrated that there was not a significant relationship between masculinity and theoretical orientations. Additionally, self-compassion was only significantly related to one of the measures of masculinity, gender role conflict scale, and not theoretical orientation.
