Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been established as an effective treatment for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. There exist many sub-treatments derived from ABA, posing a challenge to providers selecting what intervention is best for a particular client. There is a growing literature aimed at developing treatment selection models within ABA, but none have yet addressed how to effectively program discrete trial training, such as how to select an appropriate trial presentation type. The present studies compared two types of trial presentation (massed trial and task interspersal) across various dimensions. Study 1 compared trial presentations on acquisition and maintenance in children. Study 2 compared trial presentations on skill acquisition during high- and low-treatment integrity conditions in college students. Findings demonstrated minimal differences between massed trial and task interspersal but highlight important considerations for implementing discrete-trial training in general. Recommendations for providers choosing to implement discrete-trial training are discussed.
