Background. Thoracic spine manipulation is a commonly used method for mobilization of the spine. Within the spinal regions, there are increased areas of proprioceptors. Proprioception is one of the key ways that our body is able to maintain balance. These spinal proprioceptors can be facilitated through manual therapy techniques. Thus, this study aims to research the possibility of a correlation between spinal mobilizations and balance. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of thoracic spine manipulation on dynamic standing balance. Research Description. A randomized controlled trial will be conducted comparing students receiving either a thoracic spine manipulation or students receiving a "sham" treatment. Study Design. This is an experimental, randomized-controlled-trial methodological proposal. Methods. Participants will be screened for eligibility. Then participants will be tested for their single-limb balance with the star-excursion-balance test before and after the intervention. Results. Due to the emergence of COVID-19 and the stay-at-home orders, data collection has been postponed indefinitely. However, a p-value of p < 0.05 is the goal of this study in determining if a significant improvement has been made in the star excursion balance test. Conclusion. If there is a significant improvement in the star excursion balance test among the participants in the intervention group, then further research should be conducted on the positive effects of thoracic spine manipulation on dynamic standing balance.
