Museums and art institutions are the shoulders to lean on regarding any subject regarding human history, including the natural sciences, art, or any other subject that is enticing to a certain demographic. These institutions serve modern societies and local communities in expanding the connection of knowledge for people of all ages. These buildings are a utopia for a vast amount of knowledge at the fingertips of modern humanity, which is evolving with the expanding number of exhibitions. There are issues that arise when objects and cultures of non-western identities are on display for the modern West. By understanding the conception of object display in museum history, the establishment of museums, and the ethics of displaying non-western art, a person can understand that colonialism continues to be rampant in the majority of North American art museums in the present day. By studying exhibitions and arts spaces from the Museum of Modern Art, Smithsonian Natural History Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum, and comparing their exhibition methods of the Art Gallery of Toronto, one can see the differences of curatorial activism. In our current social climate of adjusting to new forms of understanding of non-western cultures, we also begin to understand the traditional methodologies of museums and collecting as outdated and harmful for indigenous communities.
