The methodology of war among most all nations militaries, to include extremist groups, require strategy, tactics and geographical knowledge. Political decision making is greatly influenced by geography; choices that may appear arbitrary are in fact driven by the Earth's mountains, valleys, rivers and seas (Marshall, 2015). In the eyes of a terrorist and/or extremist, when targeting or planning an attack, specific locations are considered more significant than others. Terrorism and transnational terrorist attacks are global issues, occurring in all regions and in the majority of countries worldwide. The purpose of this paper is to examine global terrorism over the past two years (01 January 2018 - 01 April 2020), by way of geospatial or 'spatial' analysis, utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The project goal is to explore how GIS provides better decision making processes for military and government organizations; I used GIS to identify the likelihood of terrorist attacks based on location. I will investigate the elements of global terrorism relating to attack locations, and specifically why certain locations are chosen for attacks. Analyzing specific locations through spatial analysis assists in the detection of areas most likely to host terrorist attacks, thus illustrating these places to be targeted due to their vulnerabilities and significance (Smith, Cothren, Damphousse, & Roberts, 2008). In order to test these probabilities, I transformed my collection of research into geocoded data, and after much analysis, I was able to confirm that attacks will most likely occur within the following terrain types: rugged and/or mountainous terrain, near city/regional/international borders, or in proximity to a capital. Further investigation also determined commonalities among these terrain types, for instance, attacks are more likely to occur when terrain types are combined with a large populace and high level of economic activity, or an unstable government. These insights collectively substantiate my hypotheses depicting vulnerability and significance of attack locations.
