Women comprise the most rapidly growing subset of the veteran population. In the past three decades, the roles and positions they filled within the active duty forces have changed drastically. The legal barriers to their service on combat ships, in aircraft, and other combat logistic support roles have been removed. However, little research exists contributing to an understanding of their specific needs and outcomes or how they differ from their male peers. Using data from the Current Populations Survey's Annual Social and Economic Supplement, this paper uses a difference-in-differences model to explore the impact of the 1994 Direct Ground Combat Definition and Assignment Rule, which rescinded the Combat Exclusion Policy, on female veterans' civilian labor market outcomes. This model reveals a statistically significant improvement in the earnings outcomes for the female veterans most impacted by the policy change. However, they have yet to reach pay parity with their male peers. As the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs ready servicemembers to leave active duty and enter the civilian labor force, there is an opportunity to provide training and guidance which better prepares female veterans for the realities of the market they will encounter.
