A dual-mode ramjet concept by NASA researchers Charles J. Trefny and Vance F. Dippold III was expanded upon by analyzing different fuel injector arrangements within the dual mode ramjet's isolator section. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses were run using Star-CCM+ with varying fuel injector arrangements to see which arrangements would provide the best performance. A 3 step ethylene - oxygen reaction model provided by R. A. Baurle, T. Mathur, M. R. Gruber, and K. R. Jackson was used to model combustion processes. Total pressure, total temperature, and mass fraction plots were used to evaluate the results of CFD analyses.Convergence of the models was met between 24,000 iterations and 45,000 iterations for the three simulations. While there were not large differences in performance between the three simulations, the two injector arrangements performed better, with the staggered fuel injector arrangement having a more valid solution than that of the default fuel injector configuration.
