The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which components of the Four Pillars support model created by Thompson and Cuseo (2012) were used in recent studies. I studied the Four Pillars Framework within research studies based on supports given to nontraditional students. I used a summative content analysis using a corpus-based approach. I found that the Four Pillars Framework was not explicitly used in the dissertations in my study; however, components of each pillar were found throughout. The Four Pillars Framework provided a heuristic that might be useful in providing a unifying framework. Research and practice could be guided through explicitly using the Four Pillars Framework. This study indicated institutional support may be the most significant pillar of support for nontraditional college students. This study could contribute to the literature for exploring language in dissertations, its usage in describing adult college students, and supports as well as barriers to degree attainment. Areas for future research may include creating studies designed to examine the experiences of veterans as a subgroup of nontraditional students.
