This study explored the relationship between the self-efficacy of physician assistants and their leadership style. Participants included a total of 163 physician assistants in the United States. They self-rated their self-efficacy using the General Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (GSE) by Schwarzer and Jerusalem (1995) and evaluated their leadership style using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X) by Bass and Avolio (1995). Autonomy was measured using the Independent Practice and Support Subscale of the Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Organizational Climate Questionnaire (NP-PCOCQ) by Poghosyan, Nannini, Finkelstein, Mason, & Shaffer (2013) and a demographic survey included items relating to gender, age, ethnicity, and years of experience. Research design was non-experimental and included descriptive statistics. Pearson Product Moment Correlations were used for continuous variables and the statistical analysis of this study included multiple regression. Results indicated that self-efficacy did significantly influence leadership behaviors in physician assistants. Positive relationships were found between leader Self-Efficacy and self-reported Transformational Leadership (explained 21.2% of the variance in Transformational Leadership) and Transactional Leadership (explained 12.2% of the variance in Transactional Leadership). This suggests that physician assistants with the self-regulation of thought processes, motivation, and self-confidence are more likely to engage in Transformational and Transactional Leadership behaviors. In addition, physician assistants' self-efficacy such as self-confidence does have an impact on leadership behaviors in healthcare, and extends the body of literature in this area, specifically demonstrating that there is a relationship between Self-Efficacy and Leadership in physician assistants.
