Speech generating devices (SGDs) are electronic augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems employed by individuals who are unable to use speech to meet their daily communication needs. The composition delays that result from utterance production with SGDs lead to difficulties keeping in-time during in-person interaction, as well as difficulty grounding and establishing mutual understanding between participants. Although these devices are not equipped to support real-time, in-person interaction, they are often used in these contexts. Through the microanalysis of interaction between individuals with ALS using a SGD and their typical communication partners, we were able to determine the situations in which augmented speakers were able to keep in-time, as well as the situations in which participants failed to keep in-time, and the strategies they used to attempt to re-ground their interactions. The findings from this study, as well as findings from further exploration of these topics, can be used to inform device design to better support in-person interaction for SGD users.
