The purpose of this study was to understand the phenomenon of attachment that occurs between a foster parent and foster child. Specifically, this study endeavored to focus on foster parents' experiences with building an attachment relationship with a foster child, despite knowing how long the child will remain in their care. Using phenomenological analysis, eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted with current and former foster parents from four states within the United States. Several superordinate domains emerged from the data analysis including, training, socioemotional investment, bonding behaviors, grief symptoms, desire for emotional support, foster parent emotional self-protection, emotions experienced by the other members of the foster family, and the foster parent's attachment with own parents influencing attachment with their foster child(ren). Implications for future research and clinical interventions regarding ways to support foster parents were discussed.
