Religion has an integral role in society and thus an effect on the economy. Previous literature argues that, overall, religion has a positive effect on the economy, though at times it can be negative. The case of Spain is evaluated and confirms this argument. When religion morphs into an extractive institution, there are grave economic consequences, such as the Inquisition and the expulsion of the Jews. Conversely, when religion maintains its posture as an inclusive institution, society flourishes due to the positive benefits it creates in the form of shared morals, certainty, and stability. The Spanish Inquisition (1478-1834) is believed to have been motivated by social control and income maximization. This paper empirically analyzes the relationship between the number of Inquisition trials, war, and reported motivation for the trial. Dr. Vidal-Robert (2011) developed an econometric model to investigate the relationship between Inquisition activity and war. This paper adapts his model to the present study with the goal of affirming the historical theories of the Inquisition's motivations within Spain. The results are consistent with the social control and revenue maximization hypotheses and show that trials increase as both war and religious motivations increase.
