A host of personality variables have been proposed to be associated with entrepreneurial success (Zhao, Seibert, & Lumpkin, 2010). However, there is evidence to suggest that the same personality traits that imbue one to succeed initially may drive them to fail. One personality factor that has been shown to instill one with entrepreneurial drive while simultaneously derailing them is proactive personality (Belschak, Den Hartog, & Fay, 2010). Successful entrepreneurs do not only need to possess creative zeal in identifying new business opportunities, but they must also demonstrate necessary leadership abilities if they wish to continue to run their companies. Following recommendations from Miller (2015) and Klotz and Neubaum (2016) to explore the negative aspects of the entrepreneurial personality, the present study explores the relationship between certain derailment factors as measured by the Hogan Development Survey (HDS) and proactive personality. Using a sample of 127 employed adults in the U.S. and Canada, proactive personality was found to be positively associated with five derailment themes: Bold, Mischievous, Imaginative, Diligent, and Colorful. Proactive personality was also found to be negatively associated with Cautious, Reserved, Leisurely derailment themes. The results of the present study have practical implications for the process of selecting and assessing proactive personality within entrepreneurial and organizational contexts.
